I was wondering if your WHS child has higher tolerance to pain.
We keep noticing that Denise is probably not feeling pain as other people do. She will hurt her knee, or smash her finger and it will not phase her. I am wondering what could be causing this.

The group of us that get together every few months often talk about this and how it is not mentioned in any of the research. Tanner definitely has a higher tolerance for pain and know a lot of our friends have the sane experiences. When I've asked the doctors nobody really has an answer. Tanner's therapist have a reason that makes the most sense to me. They said it's a sensory issue. Just like Tanner prefferring food with BOLD flavors or playing with a toy with a lot of texture. For Tanner to feel pain it has to really HURT!!!
This is what I've been doing to try to help. I went to a website called South Paw that has a "brushing kit". It has several different kinds of body brushes. Tanner's therapists taught me which brush is for which part of the body and what types of strokes to use. These brushing techniques stimulate and kind "wake up" the nerve endings. You can email me (JessMarie9@live.com) if you want more info on the brushes. I am seeing a slow improvment in what Tanner is able to feel. If your therapists are not familiar with the brushes and the techniques I would gladly make a video and send it to you. We've been doing it for months now so I feel confident in showing you the right way. I hope this helps.

We have also noticed this with Harry. Our friends six month old grabbed and scratched him the other day and he never even noticed. I will ask his Peadiatrician when we see him next week but I think the sensory issue sounds like a good reason.

Now that you mention it, Kendall may not be feeling pain as much either. We always say how tough she is but never really think about the fact that maybe there is a connection. When Kendall goes to the doctor and gets shots, she never cries. She does feel pain, but at a much lesser degree. Interesting discussion.
Mihaela, I know you sent me an email to send you my info and a video. Since others are interested I am going to write a post on this site with the link for the brushes and a video of the routine I do with Tanner. I'll email you and let you know when I post it. I plan on tonight. Maybe it will help out some others as well:)
Carson's therapists had the same thought as Tanner's. C has always needed MORE: stronger flavors, louder music, brighter lights, faster slides, higher swings, so it just figures that it takes a harder bump or a bigger scrape to slow him down.
Our 16 yr. old daughter, Mandy, has a high tolerance for pain also. If she cries, then she is in really bad pain. Two years ago we thought she was going through a phase when she cried at school a few times a week, but last year we found out she had cancer. I know she had those "cysts" on her forehead for at least 2 years. Five doctors said not to worry about them. Finally, I took her to her pediatric surgeon and asked him remove the two largest ones on her forehead. A week later, we got results of skin cancer. She has been cancer free for almost a year now and hardly ever cries.
Hi, My daughter is 12yrs old and also has a very high tolerance to pain. I am not sure if she actually has a high tolerance or the pain is just not registering to her that this hurts, "say ouch", either way it's always a little scary but we just try to be extra careful and I try to read her and do so very well. When i see any changes in behavior I know something is not right.
