KAylee has had issues with congestion since birth. Her pediatrician told me today to call a pulmonary specialist...so I did; we are scheduled in July. I guess I am unsure what the point is ofbthis doctor. Has anyone's child seen a pulmonologist before, and if so, what kind of tests were done and/or what are some possible issues they may find? I do not know what questions to ask...

WE started to see pulmonary last year. One of the interesting things they have done is run tests to check Mia's immune system. Two things they have found so far was that she has a low count for pneumnonia ever after the vaccine. Pulmonary is now referring us to an immunologist and they will be able to replenish what she is missing in her immune system through an IV about every one to two months. We see Dr. Brooks at CHOP bbut I know he also has an office in Princeton.
Rochelle is 32 years old now. As a child she was always congested. Eventually we figured out it was the result of immune impairment(one infection after another),and hyponia(unable to handle secretions. Since having her tonsils removed, pneumo-vac and early treatment of infections with antibiotics,things are much better
We've been seeing a pulmonologist now for nearly 2 years since Sam was in the hospital diagnosed with respiratory distress. Since then we've developed a sick care plan when Sam is ill which consists of vest therapy treatments every 4 hours, gets budesonide in his nebulizer 2 times a day and then albuterol every 4 hours. We also monitor his pulse ox and gets oxygen as needed. However, since all this doesn't work alone he does need to also have antibiotics. We recently have been to see the his PCP 2 times in 14 days because of an ongoing illness, that I noticed was turning into a respiratory infection, antibiotics were not clearing things up, the doctor gave Sam a seconday antibiotic that also wasn't doing much. According to his pulmonologist I was doing everything possible and I just needed to give the antibiotics time to work for him. In the meantime, he also developed an ear infection due from all the sinus drainage. His poor nose got so raw from me having to wipe his nose and use the suction machine to clear his nasal passages. Not a happy camper. Made for some rough nights. Took him back today and the PCP gave us prednisone, shortly after getting the first dose it started to work. Breathing easier and was able to rest better.
We had Sam's immune system checked when he was about 2-3 years old. And there was no indication at that time that his immune system was down. But now that he's older, maybe it is something we should check into again. Sam doesn't get the pneumonia vaccine every year, only the flu shot, I guess that is something I should bring up to his MD.
